Drainage advice written for other parts of the country doesn’t fit East Texas ground. The numbers that shape every recommendation we make come from the soil survey and the rain gauge, not a brochure.
Here’s the mechanism in plain terms: rain soaks through the sandy top few inches fast, then hits a clay subsoil it can barely penetrate. The water perches on that clay and has nowhere to go, so it sits — in your low corner, along the foundation, in the flat backyard the builder graded. A French drain, a swale, or the right combination gives that trapped water a path out. Everything we build starts from that reality.
The core idea
Almost every drainage problem in Tyler is one of two things, and the whole job is figuring out which one you’re dealing with. Surface water is the water you can see: rain that sheets across the lawn, pools in a low spot, and runs off slowly because the ground can’t absorb it fast enough. Groundwater is the water you can’t see: rain that soaked into the sandy topsoil, hit the clay a foot or two down, and now sits there saturating the soil — seeping up through the grass, keeping a corner spongy for days, creeping toward the foundation. They look similar from the back porch, but they need different tools.
Surface water is solved on top of the ground: regrading to establish fall, a swale to guide the flow, catch basins and channel drains to intercept it, buried downspouts so the roof isn’t feeding the puddle. Groundwater is solved below the surface: a French drain dug down into the saturated zone, wrapped in filter fabric so our clay fines can’t clog it, carrying the trapped water off to a lower discharge. Get the diagnosis wrong — put a surface drain on a groundwater problem, or the reverse — and you spend money without fixing anything. That’s the single most common reason a drain “didn’t work.”
In Tyler, plenty of yards have both at once: the top few inches shed water while the soil below stays saturated. The honest answer there is a combination, sized to the property — and the only way to know the right mix is to read the actual lot. That’s what a free assessment is for, and it’s why we never quote a fix before we’ve seen the water for ourselves.
You don’t need weeks of standing water to have a drainage problem worth addressing. There’s no penalty for calling early, either. If we come out and decide your yard just needs watching for another season, we’ll tell you exactly that, and you’ve lost nothing but the few minutes it took us to walk it. We’d honestly rather tell you a problem is minor than sell you a system you don’t need — partly because it’s how we’d want to be treated, and partly because a reputation in a town the size of Tyler is built one straight answer at a time.
No surprises
Drainage is one of those trades where it’s easy to feel talked down to or upsold, because the work is underground and most people only do it once. We try to run it the opposite way. After we walk the property, you get a plain explanation of what’s causing the water — surface, groundwater, or both — and a written scope that spells out what we’d install, where it discharges, and why. No mystery line items, no “just trust us,” no pressure to decide on the spot.

In most of Smith County the ground is a sandy or sandy-loam surface sitting on a dense clay subsoil. Rain soaks quickly through the loose top few inches and then hits the tight clay layer, which drains very slowly. The water perches on top of that clay and has nowhere to go, so low spots stay wet long after the rain stops. A French drain or regraded swale gives that trapped water a path to leave.
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe in the bottom, wrapped so soil can't clog it. Water in the surrounding ground seeps into the gravel, drops into the pipe, and flows by gravity to a lower discharge point. It's built to move water that's below the surface or trapped in saturated soil, which is different from a surface drain that only catches water running across the top of the ground.
For a typical yard drain we trench about 18 to 24 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide, though the exact depth depends on where the water sits and what you're protecting. The trench has to fall continuously toward the outlet — we hold a minimum slope of about one percent so water keeps moving and doesn't sit in the pipe.
